On March 23, DJI Innovation filed a lawsuit against Insta360 with the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court over six patent ownership disputes, marking DJI’s first such lawsuit in mainland China.
DJI claims that several former DJI employees applied for patents within one year of resigning, using core drone technologies (including flight control and image processing) closely tied to their former roles at DJI. DJI is seeking to be recognized as the legitimate patent owner and is claiming financial damages.
Insta360 responded the same day, saying it had not yet received formal litigation materials. The firm stated the patents in question were independently developed by its employees at Insta360, are not core patents, and will not impact its business operations. Liu Jingkang, founder of Insta360, said the company would actively defend itself in court.
Following the news, Insta360’s share price dropped 6.98% to close at 181.15 yuan per share, wiping out more than 5.4 billion yuan in market value. The case has sparked broad industry discussion about talent mobility and the boundaries of technology protection in the hard tech sector.
